What are the best pencil crayons you can buy?
The easy answer is just to point to most popular and most expensive which are typically Prismacolor Premier. I bought the set for myself on sale for 140.00 several years ago and don’t regret. I do like the color choices and find the tips don’t break as much as other brands. On the downside I do find the vividness and pigmenting lacking. My favourite way to color is using watercolor pencils. If you are going to buy- buy the best you can afford. They last and last and you will likely only have to buy once. I find Watercolor pencils have intense vivid colors. I would take a cheap watercolor pencil over a midrange or an overpriced pencil crayon any day. As well as Prismacolor pencil crayons I own Caran d’Ache, DerWent and the ridiculously expensive but worth every penny SMALL set of Faber-Castel brand. Th best bang for my buck is for sure, Staedtler Watercolor Pencils . Drawing with Faber-Castel almost feels like your are creating with intensely colored hard silky molten butter. The Caran d’Ache are nice but not where near as good as Faber-Castel. If on a budget I would start with Staedtler Watercolor Pencils. They are reliable and hassle-free. I love the portability of pencil crayons however do about 70% of my adult/ zen coloring using markers.
I began coloring mandalas about 4 years ago. I have been looking for ways to add mindfulness to my life as well as my family. I have found almost everyone responds positively to adult coloring and I am sure we have inspired many people to take up this zen craft!
Best Pencil Crayons Top Picks- Adult & Zen Coloring
#1 Staedtler Watercolor Pencils
#2 Faber-Castel brand
I buy all kinds of different brands of markers but the truth is I always (ALWAYS) go back to my Copics. What do you use for your adult coloring? Markers? Pens? Pencil Crayons?
I am at times often surprised my family and friends has never had an intervention to stop the bordering on mental illness obsessions i get with crafts. The worst incident USED to be the weekend in 2003 i decided to give stamping a try and ended up better stocked than most scrapbook stores within the week. This weekend brings on a new fixation and yet another way to avoid packing and getting ready to move! Been filling my time playing with Copic Markers and digital stamps.
I bought handful at my local art stre ( 3.99 each for Copic Ciao and I get teaching discount so they worked out t be 3.49 Canadian plus 13 % tax).. Been back twice in last couple of days and now have close to 90 markers and still have couple of holes but will restrain myself. Kids and I.. whoever drops by have been having in coloring in big stack of digital images and stamps. Anything where kid sand i just sit and hang- whether i be playing a board game or working on crafts in great. My dining room table is often a mess of glue and glitter and markers and we have lots of laughter and conversations that just wouldn’t happen otherwise.
Here is one my 9 year old son, William did last night.
I went through the Prismacolor Colored Pencils Pencils episode in 2007 and still have about 300 very sharply sharpened pencils n special case in my craft room. That led to the Watercolor Pencils a week later. I actually enjoy the watercolor pencils a lot and surprised they aren’t more popular. They give you more control than Copics and certainly more cost effective.
This week I decided to jump head first into Copic Markers. I am not entirely jumping blind as I do find the color theory and concepts very similar to painting with watercolour. Reason I love watercolor so much is working with colour and blending so the Copics are perfect and less mess.. also easier to blend and get colours right.
Above is my first attempt to colour an image and tho lots of flaws learned alot 🙂
I have been working on aiming less for perfection and more on enjoying myself and not worrying to much about getting it right the first time.
I am currently on massive hunt for nice digital stamps so if you know of site or have a site/blog with digital stamps please share!

Cricut has a wide range of Christmas cartridges available to buy- some pretty superfluous if you ask me and some an excellent choice to add to your collection. See below my thoughts on what I think are the Best Cricut Cartridges, I based my rating on a variety of images, versatility and longevity… basically what is the most bang for your buck.
I would LOVE ot hear what others think- do you agree? What Cricut Christmas cartridge do you like best?
I am compiling the list of all the Cricut Cartridges that have been issued that are Christmas related- also rating which ones I think are the best Cricut Cartridges.
New Christmas Cricut cartridge released today, Cricut Scandinavian Christmas Cards and images forthcoming!
What are Best Cricut Christmas Cartridges?
Winter Woodlandis actually one of my favourites, Very sophisticated “pretty” designs, The designs work equally well with cards or scrapbook pages. A nice mix of winter and Christmas images and sayings. AND you also get alphabet and 3-d village shapes. I highly recommend. The price at around 20.00 is why I give it a 9/10
Trim the Tree is a bit out there.. think they were stretching things a bit. Lots of intricate filigree work here.. some of it downright ugly. Pass. 4/10
Christmas Cheer has nice solid designs that you will get plenty of use from. Basic Christmas shapes. 7/10
This is one of my favorites and I would consider this a must have for Christmas card making. The card shapes- as well as envelope designs can be used year round. 8/10
Joys of the Season Focuses heavily on 12 days of Christmas as well as some classic winter/Christmas images like snowflakes, Santa, Christmas trees, gifts, etc, This is pretty good and I give it 7/10
Winter Frolics is mostly folk art images of children and people. This would be okay if you were teacher.. kids will love it. For the scrapbooking or cards a limited look. 6/10
Cricut Solutions Cartridge- Christmas is older and hard to find. It has really good basic Christmas and winter shapes and if you could only have one Cricut Christmas cartridge this is a good bet. Has usual holly berries, Santa designs, gingerbread, etc. The images would be excellent for scrapbooks, cards and vinyl wall art. 8/10.
Winter Lace Let it Snow Let it Snow, let it snow… this a cartridge of all snowflakes. say no more. Hard to rate.. but for over all usefulness unless you are a weatherman… 3/10.
This cartridge is actually inspiring me to make a “Worst Cricut Cartridges List..”
Christmas Cheer is very popular. Has all the classic Christmas images in traditional very usable styles, Christmas bulb, tree, snowmen, ornaments, gift tags. This I would also say if you could only get one… A perfect compliment to Christmas Cards (see above) 8/10
Gingerbread Mark me down as a NO. BUT you might be able to get pretty cheap- like around 10.00. The whole cartridge is gingerbread shapes. Maybe if you were trying to attract Hansel and Gretal to your home otherwise PASS. 3/10
Speaking of Winter features a very nice “icicle” font perfect for school bulletin boards. Lots of Christmas and Winter shapes ( snowmen, scarves, etc) a good solid bet. 8/10
The biggest rage in scrapbooking and card making right now is the use of digital cutters. The one most people are familiar with is Provocraft’s Cricut. The familiarity is largely in part because they spend a ton of money on advertising- both in print and constant late night infomercials.
There are many different types of digital cutters in a wide price range. With most craft cutters you can create, buy or download cutting files and use on your machine. What makes this confusing is the file format. Most machines will only recognize specific formats and leads to endless forum discussions on file conversions :-). You can cut any SVG on a Cricut Explore machine, using their Design Studio software.
What is an MTC file? MTC is the format used by third party software Make the Cut is an older 3rd party software that was used with KNK Machines, like KNK Zing and MAXX. The troubled software developer stopped updating for KNK machines and left many users stranded. This may be why KNK machines have lost popularity over the years and since then SCAL has long since taken over, along with the eclips Sizzic machines,
What is an SVG file?
SVG format can also be use with the most popluar third part software for digital cutters, including Cricut Explore, SCAL, Make the Cut.
SVG or ( Scalable Vector Graphics ) files have become popular because they can be used with third part software and a variety of cutting machines. If you are lucky enough to havan e older version of SCAL, SCAL 2 you can cut SVG files just with your Cricut. After several lawsuits there is no software available right now they will let you cut images on a Crciut other than with Provocraft products and cartridges.
The newer Cricut machines, like Cricut Explore will allow you to cut your own SVG files using the bundled Design Studio software.
In my opini,on SVG format will keep growing in popularity and I suspect will be the industry standard.
SVG files can be imported into Klic N Kut software, Sure Cuts A Lot ( SCAL2), AI , Inkscape and Funtime. Files are usually created in a vector program then imported into this format for use. You can open AI files and save as SVG in Inksacpe or AI. So if you have SCAL software and see a file you like for sale or downlaod but it is not in SVG format- get the AI version and easily convert.
What is a GSD File?
GraphTec Vector Graphic Data or GSD format- This file is read by software used with machines made by Graphtec , including Craft Robo, Silhouette Cameo craft cutters, and Wishblade. Yes- there are all basically the same machine!
With a and the Robo Master soft, ware its comes with you can also download an encrypted GSD file from Quickutz website ( these are saved as GST files). Only A Silhouette can cut these files and they are not transferable. i.e you cannot share or distribute.
There are several version of the Robo Master software used with GSD files and they are not backwards compatible. This means if you get a GSD file created with version 4 it will not open in version 2. MOst design files are made using Robomaster 2.4. Any one who sells there GSD files knows this and uses this version so you will not have trouble opening. Where is can be a problem is if you are downloading free files from the Internet. If you have trouble opening the file- try converting or download the 2.4 version as an alternate for your up to date version.
GSD files can also be read by third party software. For example, You can SOMETIMES import a GSD file into Klic N cut software and cut with a Klic N Kut machine or with Graphtec machine if you are using GE version of KNK software.
GSD does NOT work with Funtime software
What is a DXF file?
DXF or Drawing Exchange Format file used with many vector programs and machines that use vector files.
They can be read by the Graphtec machines bundled software including Wishblade, Craft Robo and QK Silhouette. You can load DXF files in Robo M aster software and save as a GSD file or cut with the DXF file. DXF is about the closet thing to a “universal” file. A DXF file will open or be imported into Funtime, KNK Software, Inkscape, Robo Master and Adobe Illustrator (AI).
DXF file are easily converted to different formats. You can using various vector programs to create you own DXF files and then load into Robo Master to cut on your Silhoutte, Wishblade, etc. Downside to DXF files is that they are huge- typically 10 times the size of a GSD file.
Inkscape is an open source ( free) program . Adobe Illustrator is probably the most popular and well known.
What is a WPC File?
WPC (WinPC) files are used with Pazzles Inspiration & Bosskut’s Gazelle. They are also used with the 3rd party software by Scrap Savvy called Funtime.
What is a KNK File?
KNK is a Klic-n-Kut file. They are used in Klic N Kut software which comes with KNK cutters. You can also buy Klic N Kut Studio GE and use with other cutters. Only KNK software can open a KNK file, Once opened a KNK file can be exported into many other formats. This file format is obsolete.
AI files are Adobe Illustrator files. These files can often be used in free vector program, Inkscape, ( if created with pdf capability) Many people use Inkscape and Adobe to create files then save and import into other formats. You can also cut directly from AI program to your cutter.
What is a SCUT file?
SCUT files are SCAL ( Sure Cuts A Lot) software files for Cricut. They have become more popular to buy and downland because they are so much smaller than SVG files- not to mention Cricut users are tired of being held hostage by Cricut cartridges.
Most pdf files are vectorized. If you import you can then save selected and edited image to use in your cutter. For example, import a vectorized pdf into Inkscape then save the image as a dxf file and load into Robomaster and cut.
You can import pdf files into KNK but not Funtime.
