Whew! Well this one was a doozy to design!!! Sometimes I get an idea in mind and takes a few times to get it right. I was inspired by my Oak Leaves and Acorns Cutting file and had idea for this card. I like to use double sided paper for my cards so knew I wanted to do that. Of course don’t have the right paper… which is insane because it is embarrassing how much paper I have! My first choice would have been to use DoubleMates Coffee Brown My LSS is supposed to be ordering me some in next order but it has been almost 3 months since she offered.
I went through my odds and ends and found some paper that I think works really well- it is actually Christmas paper from Basic Grey’s Wassail Collection. I think the deep burgundy, olive greens and rust colours work f=very well for Fall. My only issue is I don’t find the card stock heavy enough for cards.
Some pitfall when designing- I originally wanted to have border all the way around the card and spent inordinate amount of time doing that so patterns would match up exactly when folded- then realized two hours in that would defeat purpose of using double sided paper- would lose the effect. LESSON LEARNED ! ๐
SO back to drawing board. More and more I am finding complicated designs are made easier in MTC. I also find Make the Cut has very few cutting and communication issues- I found KNK software to be very flaky. Curious to hear if others who use both feel same way. The issues seemed to always be communication issues with software and cutter.
I have heard that new KNK cutting machine, Maxx Air using blue tooth technology has resolved some of those issues.
After designing file was time to cut.. as usual I have every issue known to man and blasted through about 15.00 worth of cardstock. ARGH. Not the machine or software’s fault- all human error! I did discover something I didn’t know however. I al pretty lazy and keep same thick blue material blade in my machine all the time.
I was having hard time getting clean cuts- this design is pretty intricate and on a whim decided to try using the red regular materials blade. I discovered I will get better cuts using the red blade with higher force then using blue blade with less force… after how many years of using this machine?? !!!
So my wasted paper was not all in vain.
I am happy with the way design turned out. I admit I was in a hurry to post so sort of slapped together card quickly. I have not been able to find glue pen that I like in stock anywhere ( Sakura Glue Pen
) and find sometimes paper can look bit over worked with regular glue so hauled out and dusted off my Xyron machine and remembered why I put it away- lots of glue remnants around the edges of paper.
( Wow- do I always complain this much??!) …. So Finally got card ready and took photo. I am not sure how all these people manage to get these crystal clear shots looking like they came from a studio but I struggle to get mine looking half decent enough to post. Note the artistic touch of orange bitter-sweet in photo. Really impressed myself with that idea ๐
So here it the file- I very nice card with border of Oak leaves, Maple leaves ( I am Canadian after all..) and acorns. You could easily cut it down to make frame for scrapbook page if you wanted. My original idea was to pop in a photo of my kids going back to school/first day to send out to grandparents but par for the course…. coloured printer out of ink.
All in all pretty happy with the card. I thin I would like to add a larger curled Maple leaf to front and some gold foil somewhere would like pretty cool as well.
Hope you like it!
